Dock Gate 20 — Southampton
expansion project in Southampton
Approach
Retail logistics company, Import Services, required larger facilities to meet current customer need for additional space. The requirement centred on an efficient and environmentally sustainable building, whilst creating an efficient and safe workplace for over 100 staff. The warehouse location, only a few yards from where the container ships are unloaded supports the unique Port Centric business model that provides Import Services with the fastest and most cost-effective method of moving stock from the vessels to UK and European retailers.
Solution
By providing a 6,000 sq m extension to Import Services existing 14,000 sq m facility, ABP Property minimised operational disruption and upgraded the accommodation on a site that was already perfect for its client’s port-centric logistics operations.
As environmental considerations were a high priority, ABP Property and its construction partner, Midas Construction, aimed for and achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating. The facility includes over 3,000 solar panels on the new and existing structures and is forecast to produce around 760,000 KWh of sustainable electricity annually; generating over 75% more energy than the warehouse consumes. The surplus green power will be used for the operation of key port facilities.
